Themes, such as, time, space, truth, identity, become the basis for practical and conceptual exploration.

Aims & Learning Outcomes

 Module Aims

  • to develop awareness of your own individual strengths, weaknesses and motivations through the articulation of an individual programme of work

  • to develop a greater synthesis of research, practice, history and critical reflection

  • to initiate consolidation of appropriate photographic technologies relevant to individual requirements

  • to extend your contextual framework of historical and contemporary practitioners

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this module you will be able to:

  • more clearly understand your own personal direction and use of the photographic medium

  • apply research, photographic practice and critical reflection to key themes and debates in contemporary photographic practice

  • demonstrate confidence in using technologies relevant to your chosen area of practice and the synthesis of these in respect of working methodologies

Assessment Rationale

This module is a period of practical and conceptual photographic practice. In the assignment that you undertake, three elements form a matrix of choices (genres, themes and methods).

Assessment Submission Checklist

You need to hand-in the following:

  • Project Proposal/Brief

  • Major Project: Resolved photographic images in a form appropriate to your brief

  • Sketchbooks containing research, idea generation, edits of contact-sheets, work prints, sketches and reflective writing

Brief

Your final submission will consist of:

  • One assignment that consists of three elements that form a matrix of choices (genre, theme and methods).

Ascertain where your main interests lie and then choose genre, theme and method.

Choose one of the following genres:

  • Portrait
  • Landscape
  • Architecture
  • Still Life

2. Then choose one main theme from which to develop an individual brief:

  • Time
  • Space
  • Truth
  • Identity

  1. Then choose an intended method of production for the work, choosing one from each of the following two categories:

  • Analogue or Digital
  • Studio or Location

These choices offer considerable flexibility in shaping your own programme of study. However, it must be clear in the final submission that you have thoroughly explored at least one genre, theme and method with significant depth in both practical and research activities, throughout the module.

You will be guided by tutors on a weekly basis in order to develop your project.

Please refer to the reading list in module PHO 514 to refer to photographic key texts and theories. Construct your own reading list developed in tutorials in order to tailor your self-initiated research.

You will work towards a suitable installation for your work in this module. An exhibition space of your own choice such as an external space on campus or within the Scott building can be chosen.

Your resolved work will be installed as an exhibition for a critique at the end of the module, Wednesday 21st March 2018.
